Community Newspaper Editor

The Southwest Journal seeks a passionate, experienced leader to fill the position of editor for our bi-weekly newspaper serving Southwest Minneapolis. The ideal candidate is unwavering in his or her commitment to high-quality, public service journalism.

The Editor is responsible for the overall direction and content of the publication. The Editor assigns, edits, and approves content for both print and digital media, while providing leadership and feedback for reporters and freelance writers. The Editor also contributes stories and accompanying photos. Additional duties include involvement in the design process, orchestrating multi-issue group projects, managing a small staff, overseeing a freelance budget, and managing website and social media content. This position requires a positive outlook, leadership, vision, flexibility, and the ability to consistently meet deadlines.

We are looking for a mature, experienced individual with the skills and energy to lead our award-winning newspaper. Candidates must be organized, deadline-driven, and collaborative in their approach. WordPress and social media skills are a plus, and photography skills are highly valued. A great sense of humor helps a lot.

This is a challenging, rewarding position and the right candidate is a mature problem-solver with a minimum of five years of editing/management experience in print publications. Must have a BA or higher degree in journalism. Must have a flexible schedule: This position requires weekend and evening hours. Must have a positive outlook, enthusiasm for community journalism, and the energy to lead. Must be a Twin Cities resident, we do not offer relocation reimbursement.

Our editorial internships involve a minimum of 8 to 20 hours a week during business hours at our downtown Minneapolis office, 1115 Hennepin Ave. Our internships are not paid positions - though we hope your experiences will pay serious professional dividends.
